No Literacy Project

McMillen Health partnered with Isaac Knapp Dental Education Foundation and Foundation for Dental Health Education to develop a total of four no literacy videos on oral health and three corresponding handouts. The idea for this project is that any population can watch the video and understand the importance of oral health. Video topics cover:

• Going to the Dentist

• Shopping for Dental Hygiene Products

• Brushing and Flossing Basics

• Importance of Nutrition and Dental Health

As our community welcomes refugees seeking asylum, health providers have learned that translating preventive health resources to native languages is not always helpful; in some situations, for a variety of reasons, native languages are predominantly spoken languages without established literacy. As such, when serving people from these places, as well as illiterate and low literate English speakers, visual resources are essential in communicating, especially animated and video formats.
